PREWRITING
Let's brainstorm. There are different ways a writer brainstorms. When I have an idea, I often move furniture or reorganize a room (There, my secret is out...I have a lot of ideas.). During my physical movement, I'm processing those ideas. Another way I brainstorm is through a messy web. A web is perfect for me to fill a page of ideas because I can see how they are all connected.

Scholastic.com offers some great tips and prompts to get your brainstorm on. On the left task panel you will see a list of different types of writing. Select the one that you might be working on and then select 'Brainstorm' from the image. How else might you be able to use this resource?

Create your road map...
There are a tons of graphic organizers. Graphic organizers help you to visually structure your ideas. Depending on your purpose (to persuade, argue, explain, entertain) and how you want to structure it, (compare/contrast, problem solution, chronological, cause & effect...) will determine which organizer you will want to choose.

To proofread means to look for errors you may have made with spelling, capitalization, usage and punctuation. It also is a good place to check your spacing between end marks and the next word as well as the proper formatting for in text citations.
It's always good practice to ask three or more peers to proofread your work. When doing so, give each person a specific job such as punctuation, spelling, capitalization, .... Editing form for both self & peer. Editing Checklist |
Publish and/or present your clean copy. Publish means to share your work with others. That may be just your teacher or you can publish your work for a wider range of audiences such as:
